“The flu, Kringle? Really? That’s what bacon, sausage, and ham get me for Christmas?” That’s what went through my head when I staggered out of bed this year to an empty plate and no Big Green Egg under the tree. Oh, well. At least my family still loves me (thank you very much for the FoodSaver vacuum sealer, Mom and …

Dave’s New Year’s Food Resolutions
All my life I’ve had this attitude that if everyone else is doing it, I’m not. This mostly relates to insubstantial things, which is why I’ve never smoked a cigarette, joined a fraternity, church, or bridge club, and I refuse to discuss religion or politics in most situations. About food, I’m the same way, so my preface here will help …
Burn! Tested: Grill Daddy BBQ Multi-Tools and Burger Stomper’s Slider Press
After I’ve spent a few hours over a hot grill, the last thing I want to do is wash a bunch of barbecue tools and do the dishes. Usually this is because my innate laziness and The Itis dictate I take a nap. Grill Daddy understands my lack of motivation and made their line of Heat Shield tools to make it a little less likely I sit on my backside with a sink full of dirty dishes. Here’s what I mean.
Burn! Tested: The Tappecue Wi-Fi Thermometer
Need a great Christmas gift for that special outdoor cook on your Christmas list? Although a bit pricy (but in the same price range as similar units), take a look at the Tappecue, a four-probe Wi-Fi enabled remote thermometer that is compatible with iPhones, iPads, iPods and Android devices. It does not work with a Windows phone. With the built-in Wi-Fi interface, you can even allow your friends to monitor how your cook is going. The probe temperature range is 50 to 500 degrees F. and the probes have six-foot cables that make them very adaptable to most smokers and cookers. (You can even use the Tappecue to monitor oven temperatures if you’re cooking indoors).
Masker’s Yule Hog Part 2: Pork Belly Christmas Sausage
For the second part of my pork bribe to Santa, I ground up Christmas breakfast sausage. Not just any sausage, though. I used the pork belly trimmings left over from the slabs of bacon I cut up for curing last week.
Burn! Tested: The popsQtool
I recently received a popsQtool from popsQtool.com and it’s a great multipurpose tool for backyard cookers. The two laser cut utensils combine a spatula, fork, serrated knife, bottle opener and grill cleaner. When the fork and spatula sections are joined, the two tools become tongs. How can you go wrong with that combination? Six tools in one!
