“So You Think You Can Cook With Garlic” is a culinary call-to-arms to the garlic geeks who overtake the small town of Gilroy, California every July. Gilroy Garlic Festival organizers threw down the gauntlet April 4 on Facebook. “For over three decades Festival guests have attended the Great Garlic Cook-Off or the Garlic Showdown and left muttering under their garlicky breath ‘I’ve got a better recipe than that’,” Recipe Committee Chairperson Deanna Franklin explained. Now it’s time to put up or shut up.
The contest is open to amateur chefs age 18 and over who post a video of themselves preparing their recipe on the festival’s Facebook page…the deadline is May 1.
Five contestants with the highest number of “liked votes” on Facebook, at the discretion of the Garlic Festival Cook-off Committee, will be posted on www.kgoradio.com on June 6 for online voting through midnight June 17. Of those, the two with the highest number of votes on kgoradio.com will be invited to prepare their recipes on stage July 29 at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. The winning chef will receive $810 in cash and the runner-up a $250 gift card from Raley’s / Bel Air Markets / Nob Hill Foods.
