For over a decade, Bartels Harley-Davidson in Marina del Rey has hosted their own chili cook-off. For three of those years, I’ve gone out and been the guy making all the chili the other competitors don’t.
Not that I use coyote or possum or anything like that; they just make red while I make chile verde or white chili. I haven’t won over the judges yet but the crowd always gets a kick out of what I give them, so there’s that.
If you’re Southern California on June 10th, you’re in luck. This year’s competition takes place that day at 11 am. There’ll be all kinds of competitor chili to sample, music, vendors, and, this being a Harley dealership and all, the latest factory iron, including the 2018 Softails. I’ve tested out this year’s oddity already and I’ll share the recipe right after the event. Hope to see you here!
