Smoke on the Water… In Vegas?!

Just when I thought Vegas couldn’t get any cooler, this happens. Smoke on the Water Productions has two barbecue competitions rolling into Sin City this weekend. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned pro or a weekend griller, one or the other has you covered.

High Stakes: USA Barbecue Championship
Making its first appearance at The Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada is the Third Annual USA Barbecue Championship May 20-22. It’s considered the world’s richest contest with a guaranteed purse of $125,000. The Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned USA Barbecue Champion’s purse of $25,000 is the largest on the competition circuit. They’re spreading the love further by paying the top fifteen overall, as well as prize money through fifty places in all four categories. The fun heats up at The Orleans Hotel & Casino, right off the bright lights of the famous Las Vegas Strip.

UNLV Ribba Ramma Amateur Competition
If you’re going to be in Vegas and you’ll be sober enough to hold a set of tongs, this is a great chance for wannabe ‘cue stars to try their hands at competition ribs. Held during the $125,000 Orleans USA Barbecue Championship, the UNLV Ribba-Ramma is an amateur competition created especially for the weekend warrior and backyard griller. Each team prepares three racks of ribs. Three bones are turned in for judging and the remainder will be offered to attendees who present UNLV Donor Cards.

Whether the secret is in the sauce or the smoke, take your ultimate rib recipe to the Orleans Hotel & Casino May 21 and let the judges decide. Registration for your team is only $75. That includes (3) three racks of ribs, (1) one bag of competition charcoal, and (1) one bag of VooDoo rub & spices. Proceeds from the hot amateur action will support UNLV Athletics through the Rebel Athletic Fund.
